A hollow core door is a pretty good choice if you have space
for it. Cover with ceiling tiles or Homosote (sp?).
For my board I built a frame of 1x3 poplar to which I attached
a piece of 5/8" particle board. Over this I use a ceiling tile. Gives
me a 2'x 4' area in which to work. Very flat. And was pretty cheap
to put together.
I have also heard that glass make a good board.
