I managed to solve this problem by using a "star" washer
between the prop and the spinner backplate. Don't know
if that is the correct name for the washer or not. Basically,
it's just a washer with teeth on the edges that are twisted.
Anyway, with this method, the washer locks the backplate to
the prop allowing the prop nut to be tightened without the
back plate slipping.
Of course, I've solved the problem in a simpler manner. I don't
use spinners. Safety nuts make things so much easier.
