I was just looking through an old 1991 Squadron catalog (all right, 
which one of you clowns 'borrowed' my new catalog?) and noticed 
something that might be useful. There is a set of 1/72 scale WWII
Luftwaffe pilot and ground crew figures avalaible (at least at that
time). You got 35 figures for $3.95. There were even two pet dogs in
the set. I didn't see any 1/48 figures but there were plenty of 1/35
figures which might be close enough for a 1/32 plane (Now, a 1/32 B-17
with full interior details - THAT I would like to see!)
