Gorillas only know three chords, but man, they know how to use them --
that's the lesson of the Eddie Angel's Guitar Party disc I found in the
bargain bin last week. You are in a maze of twisty surf guitar tunes,
all different, from Eddie Angel and friends. Amazon shows this thing
as having 37 tracks but mine only has 12, so where are the other 25?
And how does he hit those tasty licks without opposable thumbs?
In other used-record scrounging, I finally know what all the fuss is
about regarding Le Tigre and Sleater-Kinney. Am I allowed to like
this stuff? I mean, it must piss off the makers of angry feminist
grrl rock to know that creepy forty-something men find it appealing.
In any case, "Get Off the Internet" is definitely going on the next
compilation disc I make.
I should also mention a couple of reggae compilations: Jack Ruby
Presents the Black Foundation (no, not that Jack Ruby, the other one)
is a fine collection of roots reggae to enlighten people like me who
haven't gotten much beyond Bob Marley and the Rockers soundtrack.
But From East Memphis to Kingston, featuring reggae covers of 60's
soul classics, seems to be more of a marketing concept for soulless
pop reggae than the musicological missing link I thought it was when
I picked it up.
[Obligatory Austin content follows.]
Finally, a treasure: All Relationships are Doomed to Fail by the Meat
Purveyors. Austin slackergrass at its finest. The punk DIY attitude
they bring to bluegrass and country is belied by the fact that they do
have chops, especially in the form of guest fiddler Darcie Deauville.
I'll post more sycophantic drooling when I make it to one of their
live shows with the camera.
