I may be incorrect, but at least here in the West - it is considered bad form for the Exchequer and the Seneschal to be the same person. What with having the person who controls the money be the same person who needs access to it for events, etc. This is in response to "Ulfie"'s note on being the "interm" Seneschal for his Barony, as well as the "Baronial Treasurer". Am I on the right Line for West Kingdom ? - for Corpora ? - for other Kingdoms ? Unto all who read these words, greetings from Yaakov! I am going down to interview at Rutgers sometime the week of Feb 8. Is there anything going on there, as I have some flexibility in my schedule and would like to catch a local practice or some such. In Service, Yaakov

Eirik asked if it is illegal for the same person to be Exchequer and Seneschal of a Barony, according to Corpora, the West Kingdom, or other Kingdoms. Interesting. I can cite chapter and verse [1] for the SCA, Kingdom's and Principalities about the separation of the two, but I cannot find a requirement in Corpora or the By-Laws about that requirement for local groups. This is disappointing. There may be such a provision in the Corporate Policies and Procedures manuals, but I don't have those to hand, and don't know them well enough to be sure. As for the East Kingdom, the laws strongly imply that the two positions are separate, and specifically allows small groups to combine them, but it never says that they must be held by separate people in Baronies/Provinces. Tibor [1] If anyone actually want's chapter and verse, let me know. -- Mark Schuldenfrei (schuldy@progress.com) [I'm just showin' you my opinions: this ain't a gift]

For small groups, the EK Seneschal's policies require that the following positions be filled: seneschal, herald, and either marshal or A&S officer. (This is in keeping with Corpora.) Note that exchequer is not on this list; small groups aren't even required to fill the office. Kingdom law says: "If a Canton, Shire, or College does not have a separate Exchequer, the Seneschal of the branch is responsible for all the exchequer duties." It says nothing further on the subject. (It does require larger groups to have an exchequer, but imposes no restrictions.) Policy goes on to say, on the subject of the smaller groups: "You should avoid doubling up on offices whenever possible, although Kingdom Law requires you to be responsible for the exchecquer's [sic] and chatelaine's duties should the offices become vacant". Baronies are required to have an exchequer. Policy says "...at this size of branch, doubling should not be necessary". It does not say doubling is forbidden. Ellisif
