This question has stumped the folks over on alt.pagan,
so I thought I'd bring it over here and see if there were any
Picts who could offer some advice--are there any good recipies
for made-from-scratch body paint, preferably some that would
stand up to perspiration, rain, etc.?

(If you told me four years ago that I'd be asking complete
strangers questions like this...)

No, DON'T try woad. Woad painted all over your body is a hallucinogen.
It will numb your perception of pain and make you feel like superman,
which is why the ancient Britons wore it into battle, and why you _don't_
want to wear it into battle. The ancient Britons wanted to kill their
enemies for real, and you don't, and they didn't care if they died in
the process, and you do.

A year or two ago somebody did an article on pseudo-Pictish body painting.
She intensively researched all the markers and dyes she could find on
grounds of ease of application, permanency, resistance to smudging, toxicity,
etc., etc. Ask a friend who's got a lot of back TIs, or write to the
Stock Clerk.
