Cannabilism is not uncommon in aboriginal societies. It's typically ritualistic. Sometimes people eat their dead relatives. Sometimes they eat people from other tribes killed in battle. It happens even today. The "laughing disease" was peculiar because it showed up mainly in women. It turns out that the men got the choice pieces (isn't that typical) while the women had to be content with things like viscera and brains. The brains are the tissue that carry the disease.
