The best small-animal pet around... rats!

I have four nine-week-old rats that need good homes. I am located in
Palo Alto, CA, so you should probably live somewhere nearby, as I
don't think the rats are up for a plane trip. :-)

The rats are littermates and all have the same basic coloration: a
"mink" (greyish-brown) coat with varying amounts of white on their
undersides. These young rats are good-natured, weaned, and healthy.

Conveniently, I have two males and two females, and prefer to find
homes for them as same-sex pairs. The two males have lived with their
father and another brother for the past month and the two females have
similarly lived with their mother and another sister since birth. I
have never had any problems with serious fighting, although they can
be quite playful.

For those unfamiliar with the concept of rats as pets, they really are
great. They are cuter than gerbils, better natured than hamsters, and
much more intelligent than either. They are easy to care for,
requiring only regular food, water, and attention, as well as a weekly
cage-cleaning. They can be trained for various things, including
using litter pans, apparently (if you want to let them run free in
your house). I've never had time to train mine, though. As for
accommodations, either a cage or an aqaurium can work. I will be
happy to brief prospective owners on what I know of rat care and point
them to further references on the subject.

So, you might ask, if I am such a fan of rats, why am I getting rid
of these four? Well, mostly because I have eight, and really don't
have the time to give proper attention to each of them. The parents
are already fairly acclimated to people, and I can take care of two
new rats, but not six!

If you are interested, send me e-mail or call me at 415 323-7063.
Nominally, I would like $10 for each pair, just as an assurance
that the new owners are serious, but this is negotiable.

I will be leaving for a one-week trip on Tuesday, 6/27, so if you
don't contact me before then, I may be slow in responding. It would
be great to get the rats into a new home before I go!
