ISO: Good, easy action camera w/ good telephoto

I am looking for suggestions/testimonials of a good digital or film camera
for taking pictures of all kinds of running events (road races, cross
country, & track meets).  I want a camera that is easy to use for a
non-photographer (a point & shoot).  Sometimes I'm close to the action,
other times I'm up in the stands, so good telephoto capabilities are
needed.

I've never owned a digital camera, so If anyone has pro/cons on them,
they're welcomed.
