Scouting Digest
Volume I, Issue 2
20th of October, 1995
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Editorial
Scouting Digest #1.1 just went out week ago on Friday the Thirteenth and
luckily didn't crash any machines on the way. Scouting Digest also has
found home at http://www.livjm.ac.uk/scoutnet/digest/welcome.htm, much
thanks to Simon Pearce, administrator of ScoutNet UK (of which more later
in this issue). Simon has also done the work of converting all the URLs to
actual links making Scouting Digest on the Web lot more useful resource.
In this issue:
- What's New (or otherwise interesting) on the Web?
- Jamboree on the Internet (JOTNet)
That's it. Enjoy!

What's New on the Web?
Global ScoutNet Pages have moved!
http://scoutnet.ch/
The Global ScoutNet Organization is switching servers in the following
weeks. I suggest updating your bookmarks from http://www.chnet.ch/~scout/
to http://scoutnet.ch/. As of 17th of October the new server seems to be
working okay. Anyway, Global ScoutNet is worth checking out. I - having
edited my own pages for the 1995 World Jamboree - liked the Virtual World
Jamboree -pages for the 1995 (the Netherlands) and 1999 (Chile) Jamborees.
ScoutNet UK
http://www.livjm.ac.uk/scoutnet/
ScoutNet UK, the largest online collection of Scouting material in the UK,
has opened it's doors to the world. Especially good place to look for
scouting related documents and programs. The Scouting Software archive
contains 14 programs with good descriptions. Also includes Talking Points:
a digest of topical items for general information throughout the Movement.
The Scout Patch Auction
http://www.tspa.com/
If you are into scouting collectibles, badges and the like, this is defi-
nitely your site. Via The Scout Patch Auction (SPA) you can get over
12,000 different scouting items. For those less serious collectors who on-
ly wish to swap badges etc. there are 'Wanted to buy' and 'Classifies Ads'
-sections which unfortunately appear to be still under construction. Also
includes Collector's Forum - articles and news for collectors.
Jim Speir's Scouting Page
http://www.dfc.com/~dfc/scouts/speirs.htm
Quite amazing indeed! Jim's page is of the rare sort where you actually
find articles from The Leader Magazine (previously posted on rec.scouting
or can.scouts-guide). Recommended.
1st Farnsfield Scout Group, Nottinghamshire
http://metro.turnpike.net/C/chris/index.htm
Some information about groups in Nottinghamshire as well as some pointers.
Also hosts rich pages about Scouting in Russia and Uganda. I found the
history of Russian scouting extremely interesting because before 1917
scouting was forbidden here in Finland by the Russian government. Anyway,
this site carries definitely new information about two 'exotic' countries
of the Scouting Movement.

Jamboree on the Internet (JOTNet)
Jamboree on the Internet (JOTNet) will be held from 21st till 22nd of Oc-
tober (ie. next weekend) concurrently with the Jamboree on the Air (JOTA).
On Internet Relay Chat (IRC) there will be action on two channels: the
regular #scouting and also on #jota. You can catch some scouts from the
Netherlands on Saturday at 13:00 and 17:00, and on Sunday at 11:00 and
17:00 (all times in CET). Check their JOTA homepage at
http://huizen.dds.nl/~jota1995/.
Suggested IRC times by Simon Pearce (simon@scoutnet.demon.co.uk):
Saturday 21st of October Sunday 22nd of October
1200 GMT 1000 GMT
1600 GMT 1600 GMT
There are also several groups you can contact (just for fun ;=) via email
during JOTNet:

Several Scout troops camping together for the weekend.
joti@nanaimo.island.net
Additionally you can reach World Scout Bureau in Geneva, Switzerland with
worldjota@scout.gn.apc.org.
On the Scouting Forum at Compuserve there is to be some happening, but I
unfortunately don't know what.
You can also find links to JOTNet related sites at the InterNETional
Scouting Pages (http://scoutwww.strw.leidenuniv.nl/scout/jotnet.html).

What is Scouting Digest?
Scouting Digest is a weekly (whenever possibly) published ezine about
Scouting on the Internet and other computer networks. Mostly it's intended
to gather into one place all the announcements for new sites and resources
on various newsgroups and mailing lists.
Scouting Digest may later come to include also longer articles, but for
now it's only to provide pointers for interesting sites.
Please, feel free to send comments & critique about Scouting Digest to
Tuomas Toivonen, <sdigest-editor@www.partio.fi>. Announcements and arti-
cles are also welcome and likely to be published.
Scouting Digest can be found at (I recommend the Scoutnet UK site because
it carries 'htmlized' version of the zine):
http://www.livjm.ac.uk/scoutnet/digest/welcome.htm
http://www.partio.fi/ScoutingDigest/
ftp://www.partio.fi/pub/ScoutingDigest/
rec.scouting, uk.rec.scouting, can.scout-guide
Alternatively, you can get Scouting Digest delivered right into your mail-
box. Send a subscribe request to <majordomo@www.partio.fi>. In the body
of the message write: subscribe sdigest your-email-address.
Majordomo will also be more than glad to send you back issues. Send:
get sdigest sdigest1-X.txt
where you replace X with the issue number.
If you have any unanswered questions, feel free to mail <sdigest-
editor@www.partio.fi>.
