I am pleased to forward the following information from Sz. Lukacs Janos of the Hungarian Scout Association in Budapest. "The home page of the Hungarian Scout Association is ready, you can read it at the following URL: -- http:/genius.tttk.bme.hu/MuszPed/Cserk/mcsszbr.html The Hungarian Scout Association (HSA) was a founding member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement joining officially in 1919. HSA survived through World War Two under tremendous pressure and at considerable risk. The HSA was disbanded by the Communist government in 1948. Scouting again continued underground. It emerged briefly during the Hungarian Rising of 1956 and then as freedom dawned in the East and the Soviet Empire collapsed, Hungary led the way as the first Eastern European nation to return to the World Organization in 1989. A tradition of Hungarian Scouting and the Magyar people was cited by Baden-Powell when he challenged the Scouts at the IV World Jamboree at Godollo in Hungary in 1933: "The White Stag has a message for you. Hunters of old pursued the miraculous stag, not because they expected to kill it, but because it led them in the joy of the chase to new and fresh adventures, and so to capture happiness. You may look on the White Stag as the true spirit of Scouting, springing forward and upward, ever leading you onward to leap over difficulties, to face new adventures in your active pursuit of the higher aims of Scouting aims which bring you happiness. These aims are duty to God, to your country, and to your fellow man by carrying out the Scout Law. In that way you will help to bring about Gods kingdom upon earth the reign of peace and goodwill." If you would like to learn of the connection between the 1933 Jamboree in Hungary and the design of leadership training in the Boy Scouts of America, browse the White Stag web page at URL: -- http://rampages.onramp.net/~lporans/whitestg.htm A link to the home page of the Hungarian Scout Association (MAGYAR CSERKSZSZVETSG) will be found at my home page at URL: -- http://rampages.onramp.net/~lporans/ I hope you find this of interest. Yours in Scouting, Lew Orans Houston, Texas
