Is there a way to edit a recorded DVD-R

I realize that a DVD-R is record once and is not directly editable,
but bear with me on my desire.

I have received a DVD-R of a 2 hour television morning broadcast which
contains several imbeded, time separated segments on hang gliding.
These separated segments are approximated 14 minutes in total length.

Is there a way that I can upload this DVD-R to my PC and then edit it
to capture only the hang gliding segments for recording to a DVD
playable in my DVD player?

If so how and are there any freebie applications that will accomplish
this?

Many thanks,

Mary

Sure. I do stuff like that all the time.

I guess so. *Unfortunately* I spent about $80 on Adobe Premiere Elements and
it just does it all for me.

Numerous video editing programs permit direct importing of DVD content,
particularly if it is is not encrypted / copy protected, although some
permit encrypted content as well. The video content, once imported, can be
edited, and combined in any way imaginable, and then a new DVD can be
"authored" / burned with whatever menus and other navigation features, if
any,you wish to include.

TMPGE DVD Author is an especially reliable, easy to use example of this type
of program, and you can download a trial version which may permit you to do
exactly what you asked about during the 14 day trial period. Ulead Movie
Factory 6 Plus is another easy to use one with a free trial.

Good luck,

Smarty

As I have a DVD / hard disk recorder, I haven't bothered to try to do
this on my PC. It's dead easy on the recorder - just copy the disk to
the hard disk, split the recording at the junction of the bits that you
want and the bits that you don't, delete the bits you don't want, join
the bits you do, and finally copy back to a new DVD.

On the PC, I have Nero (pay-for ware).
http://www.nero.com/eng/index.html
I've used this for various things but, to me, some of its functions are
not very user-friendly. I certainly haven't tried editing. But most of
the time, I've finally managed to do what I intended to do (even if I
had no idea how I actually did it!).

However, there is a lot of freeware out there, and I'm sure that someone
will recommend something. [If not, ask on alt.comp.freeware.] But maybe
it's time to treat yourself to a recorder?

The main thing would be to use a program that won't have to
re-encode the video. You will find some free ones in the "Tool"
listings at www.videohelp.com

Select "Video Editors (MPG/DVD)"

My favorite is VideoReDo TVSuite, it has a fully functional
free trial period.

http://www.videoredo.com/en/index.htm

It's not free but it is easily worth the price, if you work with
MPEG too any extent at all. It corrects and fixes a number
of problems that MPEG is prone to, without transcoding,
and is very fast. It can work with the DVD Recorder formats
of MPEG and many DVD Recorder users swear by it. It
can create .mpg files that DVD authoring programs like
TMPGEnc DVD Author (TDA) find very compatible.

Luck;
    Ken

Usually I take the dvd out and put it in my player upstairs, record the cuts
I want through my happauge mpg capture card.

Then use videoredo to edit further.

Why bother capturing via a mpg card and in the process losing quality and
taking real time when you can just open the VOB off the DVD files directly
in VideRedo. Just pop the disc in the computer and copy off the VOB files
and then edit.

All the following files are freeware.

Copy your DVD-R vob file and rename its extension to mpg, then import it
into Mpeg2Cut2 or Mpeg Streamclip to edit your DVD file.

Mpeg2Cut2
http://www.geocities.com/rocketjet4/
or
Mpeg Streamclip
http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-win.html

If your mpeg2 file is not DVD-compliant, use gui4ffmpeg or PVAStrumento to
analyze and correct the file.

gui4ffmpeg
http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=gui4ffmpeg
or
PVAStrumento (click the Digital Video menu item)
http://www.offeryn.com

Then import the mpeg2 file into DVDBuilder to author and burn the DVD.
