THE MONOGRAPHE CHORNOBYL CATASTROPHE
The monographe Chornobyl catastrophe is the first in the world
literature, unique encyclopaedic dedicated to numerous and various
aspects of the technogenic catastrophe which is considered to be the
hardest and of the largest scale in the human history.
The monographe's authors are about 250 scientists and engineers,
workers of the State establishments and specialists in many areas of
economics who posess extremely valuable experience on the Chornobyl
catastrophe's liquidation and elimination of the catastrophe's
consequences. Since all the unique information is gathered in one book
and given by those who directly participated in the known events, all
this brings for the reader a bright opportunity to penetrate the whole
panorama of the Chornobyl's problems. The monographe
represents information received from reliable sources about
historiography of the events, social, economic and ecological
consequences (part I) and medical effects (part II) of the
accident.
The part I describes:
- modern appreciation of causes and scale of the Chornobyl
catastrophe (estimation of conditions which caused the accident and
its following development, urgent technical post-accident measures,
information about the arrangement and management of the works on
elimination of social and economic consequences of the Chornobyl
catastrophe (the State bodies' activity on localization of the
catastrophe's scale and elimination of the accident's consequences,
urg nt measures on protection of the suffered population, social and
economic consequences of the Chornobyl catastrophe, participation of
the world community in limitation of the accident's consequences.
forming of the field of radioactive contamination (nature conditions
in the zone of the active catastrophe's influence, the main principles
of the territory contamination with radionuclides of the Chornobyl
fall-out, radioecological situation on the contaminated areas in time
of the pre-accident period, geochemistry of the Chornobyl fall-out's
radionuclides, biogeochemical transformations of radionuclides,
biogeochemical destruction of the reactor's graphite).
- ecological and biological consequences of the Chornobyl
catastrophe (peculiarities of biological effects of radiation of low
effectiveness, biological effects of animals, experimentally proved
means of modification of early and later radiobio ogical effects of
plants , the accident's influence on the process of biocoenosis).
- analysis of effectiveness of measures on prevention of
radioactive contamination spreading (analysis of effectiveness of
nature protecting measures, measures on reduction of the radioactivity
migration and appreciation of these measures, esti ation of
effectiveness of works on dust pressing, agricultural aspects of
liquidation of the CNPP accident's consequences, accomplishment of
measures as for protection of the Pripiat river's waters from
repeating radioactive contamination, radioecolo ical monitoring,
problem of radioactive substances in the CNPP estrangement zone;
conceptual base of long-term maintenance of the CNPP estrangement
zone).
The part II represents:
- factors of the Chornobyl catastrophe's influence on the health
state of the population (irradiation doses received by people in
result of the accident at the CNPP and their share in the whole
irradiation of all the sources of ionizing irradia ion; irradiation
doses received by participants of the catastrophe's liquidation, by
evacuated population, people from the contaminated areas, of thyroid
glands, internal irradiation of the population; chemical factors;
agricultural works; social and psychological factors);
- the health state of different groups of the population (medical
and demographic consequences; health of those who participated in
liquidation of the Chornobyl catastrophe's effects, health of the
evacuated population, inhabitants of contamina ed areas, pregnant
women, children and those babies who were irradiated being in the
foetus state, nestohastic effects of irradiation, stohastic effects of
irradiation, oncology diseases and haemoplastisis, changes caused by
hot particles, radioact ve risk and prognosis of consequences);
- clinical aspects of the Chornobyl catastrophe (sharp radiation
sickness, blood-creating system, endocrine system, thyroid glands,
cerebrum, nervous system, immune system, cytogenetic system,
gepatogeliaric system, sexual system, organs of per eption, vegetative
distony, special features of the child organism's reactions in reply
on influence of unfavourable factors of the Chornobyl catastrophe,
blood-creating system of children, respiratory system of children,
digestive system of children special features of reproductive
function's developing of those girls suffered radiation influence.
- register of those who suffered from the Chornobyl catastrophe
(the National register of Ukraine, groups of people who are to be
listed in the National register of Ukraine, clinical and
epidemiological register, specialized subregisters, addre sed clinical
examination of the population);
- system of rendering of medical and sanitary assistance for
those who suffered (medical assistance for the population who suffered
during the sharp period of the catastrophe, arrangement and rendering
of first urgent medical and sanitary assis ance for those who suffered
during the evacuation, specialized medical assistance. Scientific
centre of radiation medicine, rehabilitation of those who suffered,
the most important aspects of complex medical and sanitary providing
for the people who uffered from the consequences of the CNPP accident.
- antiradiation protection of the population (principles of
radiation security, criteria of the decisions' acceptance,
prophylactic of external irradiation, prophylactic of internal
irradiation, radioprotectors, decorporants, enterosorbents, mo
ificators of irradiation, information spreading about radiation and
hygienic measures.
The Chornobyl catastrophe is not the first but the most tragic
example of nuclear accident. As the tragedy happened, all the world
must analyze the bitter experience and arrive to certain conclusions.
From this point of view, the monographe is the first attempt to
summarize wide experience of many Ukrainian scientific institutions
which from the first days became direct participants of the CNPP
accident's liquidation and elimination of the catastrophe's
consequences.
The book represents statistically reliable information based on
the comparison with control groups of observation. There was
accomplished large-scale analytic work on summarizing of the data.
The system of the material's representing makes this material
intelligible not only for scientists, but also for wide circle of
public readers who do not give up expressing their deep attention with
regard to the Chornobyl's problems.
As every author has certain own point of view as for the problems
which are enlightened in the monographe, their opinions sometimes do
not coincide. As all the problems brought to life with the Chornobyl
catastrophe, are complicated and many-sided, the authors have not
avoided some incompleteness and controversy, while representing some
separate points. That is why all the comments and suggestions will be
attentively and gratefully received by the authors.
