From Monday 2 to Friday 6 December 1996, RMIT is celebrating its
R&D excellence with a program of events and lectures entitled:

Innovation @ work (http://www.rmit.edu.au/innovation.10.html)

Dr Mohamed El Bouanani will present a postdoctoral seminar
entitled: 'Ion beam development and application in material sciences'.

Speaker: Dr Mohamed El Bouanani
Date: Wednesday 4 December 1996
Time: 3.30 - 4.30 pm
Location: RMIT City campus, building 8, level 11, room 68

Abstract:

When a high energy beam of charged particles is incident upon a
target, several processes may occur, eg secondary electron emission,
nuclear reactions, incident ion scattering, sputtering, recoil of target
atoms, x-ray production etc. These processes can be used for
quantitative characterisation of thin films and near surface of
materials.

Progress in two areas based on recoil particle detection wand
analysis will be presented:

i) Status of the Heavy Ion Recoil Spectrometry as a 'semi-universal'
ion beam analysis method will be discussed as well as its application
in the interfacial reactions study of metal/III-V semiconductors used
in high speed devices and high dielectric constant materials for high
density and non-volatile memory devices.

ii) A new detection approach for hydrogen characterisation using a
(delta)E-E Si telescope and a He-4 ion beam to overcome limitations
of existing techniques. The new technique aims to provide better
depth resolution for analysis as well as internal calibration using the
Rutherford scattered He-4 ions.

Dr Mohamed El Bouanani

My research activities have concerned the study of the interactions of
energetic ions with materials, the development and applications of ion
beams to modify and characterise thin solid films and near surface
solids.
