Given that there was > reference to smut sites, I'm not really surprised. > I downloaded three files from ftp.free86.org Friday or so, using Fetch on my Mac, and a cable modem. Fetch told me the download rate on the files ran around 58KBytes/sec. Total of the file sizes was 42 megs; I didn't time the download, but all three files were on my hard drive in between 12 and 15 minutes total. As usual, there were a few times when nothing was coming over -- the usual Internet pauses. But that download time is a heck of a lot faster than using a 28.8k modem. (Can you imagine even trying to download 42 megs of files on a phone line with a modem?) I also have to say that even on the Web, browsing is faster on cable when downloading images, hidden javascripts, animated GIFs, and Java applets than it is on my 33.6k modem. Mileages vary, of course, and there is much more to browsing speeds than connection speeds; but I'll take my cable over my phone line for browsing any day. -- Phil Stripling | Sorry for the munged replyto The Civilized Explorer | line, but you know what. http://www.cieux.com/ | needs to be removed
