The question of "Whether X *could* lead to Y" is almost always true (though perhaps with vanishingly small probability) for any X and Y. What is much more interesting is how likely is this outcome, and even then, in the event of a large tear, how likely is that to result in death or serious injury (and, secondarily, property damage, I suppose). Nobody is recommending shooting bullet holes in an aircraft just for the fun of it; presumably, this would only happen in the event of a serious incident on board, or, very rarely, by accident. The relevant question is whether the risk posed by such holes is serious enough to outweigh whatever the benefits might be of having more firearms aboard aircraft. Of course, people very likely will disagree about what the benefits might be, but at least the risk side of the equation should be answerable with some degree of scientific validity.
