Hank Fung wrote the quoted material below:

" The Travelodge on the edge of the Tenderloin (I forget what street) is
" pretty good. I think it's called the "Civic Center" Travelodge, but it
" is actually in the Tenderloin (which is slowly but surely improving).
" It's about $71 a night, and the service is pretty good.

Bingo. Now that you've begun to reveal them, there's also the TraveLodge
at Valencia and Market.

" The ones that I know that are cheaper than even $30 a night are
" hostels. You have to share a bath and it might be a little packed,
" but that offer reasonable rooms for a cheap price. There are
" even places in North Beach going for $22 or so.

Indeed. There are the AYH hostels, the Globe (which I think is
independent), the Easy Goin', and the one in the Haight which name I can't
remember, but which sends flyers around advertising $12 a night. I think
Green Tortoise still offers cheap accommodations in North Beach.
