Anyone know a cheap place to stay in the Bay Area?

The wife and I want to visit a friend this weekend, he lives in
Oakland. We've been looking at rates around the Bay Area, and
everything seems to be at least $95/night and up. We found one place
for $45, but that was in the Tenderloin. Don't need anything fancy,
just a place to crash that doesn't have cockroaches, hookers, or drug
dealers. I'd even pitch a tent if we have to.

There are some ex-chain places around Vallejo that are probably cheaper,
but it's been 3 1/2 years since I used one myself so I can't quote
prices.

Motel 6 in Belmont (south of San Francisco International Airport on US
101) has a $90 basic rate. http://www.motel6.com/

If you do have a tent, there are state beaches, and it is after Labor
Day. :-)

No, it does not. That's as lame as researching a school paper by simply
doing a Yahoo search. Studying a community means taking the time to get
to know people, by hanging around them in social groups, charitable
organizations, neighborhood groups, bands, arts groups, poetry groups,
whatever. It means connecting by going to bars, coffeehouses, and whatnot
and talking with people.

I have had no trouble going to an unknown town (such as Spokane) and
finding an inexpensive place to stay at about half the price advertised in
the "discount" coupon books. You just hang out, talk with people, get to
know them a little.

You might also want to check out the Priceline and Expedia Bidding Forum for
the SF Bay Area at http://pub4.ezboard.com/bpricelineandexpediabidding.html
. Don't know much about it, personally, but it looks kind of interesting
and it does appear people are actually getting places for much less than
$100/night.

Yes, you're correct, not continuously. In the earlier Gold Rush (not the
current one), eggs sold for $2 apiece and people were willing to pay for
them. People who came here was scammed, shanghaied, and robbed.

" San Francisco WAS a
" big office and manufacturing center 50 years ago, when there were
" real honest fish canneries on Fisherman's Wharf, and Ghirardelli

All replaced by tourist traps designed to milk money from tourists who
want a touch of home (that is: chain stores, schlocky eateries, trinket
shops, etc.)

You're right that SF did have a history as a fairly civilized place, which
was then overrun by tourism. I can remember actually eating a decent meal
on the Wharf. Golly, that dates me, doesn't it.

I'm loathe to recommend tourist accommodations to people who won't get to
know the lay of the land. Several months ago I overheard a couple
tourists getting off a cable car saying, "I've just GOT to try out the Old
Navy store; it's larger than ours at home." My heart sank.

Yeah, 'cause we all know really smart people fly off to some destination
w/o a place to stay lined up before they get there.

And I often hang out at our local coffee shops so that out of towners can come and
"get to know me", and I can impart my wisdom about the best places to be in my
town.

Since I was a very small kid, one of my favorite venues for mingling with
locals is the Muni. To this day, I strike up conversations whenever I
ride--which is several times a week. The amount of insight gained in terms
of keeping up with San Francisco is incalculable. I have always thought that
out-of-towners were literally throwing away a fabulous resource by insisting
on renting a car.

Cab drivers are marginally OK. Most of them won't open up until the fare
demonstrates a certain level of "worthiness", either by establishing himself
as a frequent visitor or regional resident. Muni is MUCH better.

In my travels, I find San Francisco to rank fairly high among cities in
terms of ease of establishing a conversation with a stranger. It is much
better, for instance, than most of SoCal, and is topped only by some rural,
out of the way places. Extended projects in the southern United States has
revealed to me that "southern hospitality" is not all it is cracked up to
be.

The bottom line is that San Francisco is hardly a "closed town" to anyone
who makes the slightest effort to scratch the surface.

I'm going on a weekend to visit a friend, I'm not interested in finding out
about your "community". The last thing I want to do after working all week is
spend my free time hunting down a bargain. If I have to spend a lot of time
doing that, then it's not really a bargain, is it? I could spend that time
working, and earning more $ to pay for a higher priced room.

Of course, these cheap places could advertise a little, then the proletarian
hordes like myself could fill their rooms, and they could charge higher prices
and make more money.

Then that may be the way to go. Everything has a price, and one's time comes
at a high value. If you are not willing to do the legwork, then you will
have to compensate by paying full fare. A lingering question: if you are
coming to visit a friend, is there some reason your friend (who lives here
and presumably knows the area) cannot direct you to suitable accommodations?
If I am traveling to an unfamiliar place that is inhabited by acquaintances,
I don't hesitate to at least inquire regarding lodging survival tips.

But that is (fortunately) not the goal of all businesses. Advertising is not
cheap. Part of what you pay for in an easily-locatable place is the fact
that it is easily-locatable. At that point, accommodations are rationed by
price.

I have to say that your desired seem to have shifted from "low cost" to
"easy to find" and "convenient". You don't get it all simultaneously.

actually, one very reasonable place is not a hotel at all
but accepts lodgers at about $30/night very clean and quiet.

thinking of any kind, even "outside the box", will not help you find
this place, though.

Hi Janithor,

I am amazed by the amount of non-information and non-answers given to your
simple question. Usenet used to be a great resource but, as you see, now it is
mostly junk.

As for your question, I know that I am late but I recommend Motel 6 in Oakland
at Embarcadero. My girlfriend stayed there for five days about six months ago.
For around $65.00 she has gotten a nice room with a view of the Marina. See
http://search.motel6.com/cgi-bin/t3.cgi/m6/motel.taf?function=detail&motelid=1080
for details.

How is it "stealing," if you are taking the envelopes to use
them as they were intended? The guy was rude to lecture you,
but it would also be more courteous of you to have your envelope
filled, sealed, and filled out when you step up to the ATM.

Nuthin' wrong with that. I once flew to Barcelona without any
knowledge of where I would stay. Found a real nice "pension" for only
$18/night; right on the main drag.

Thank you. I think I've found a place: Mt. Diablo. I'm trying to register on-line,
but it's saying the stay date is too close to the registration date. So I'll call
tomorrow and see if I can still register. They show 22 sites open, so I think we
should be able to get something. There was a private campground I found on the web
in Marin if this doesn't pan out. Mt. Tamalpais State Park was all booked up for the
weekend.

If this falls through, that Motel 6 might work. The website you linked shows $85.
Ah well, close enough for jazz. Thank you for not insulting me, though. I'm
thinking of trying to hit every McDonalds in San Francisco to make my trip complete.

I've traveled around the country a lot, at one point driving for almost 6

had a problem was 4th of July weekend in Medford several years ago. I had

Every place was booked, YET a hotelier took pity on me and told me that if
the reservation for the executive suite didn't show up by midnight I could
have that -- at $45, normally about $250 or so. They didn't show up to
claim the room and I had a 25 inch TV, a king bed, a private patio, a
private hot tub, and a full wet bar. Unfortunately, I didn't have much
chance to use it all.

So, I still don't make reservations. I just play it by ear.

Nice when you have the time to kill. I'm going to be in Evansville (IN) for
two nights early next week for a one day project. You can bet there WILL be
reservations.

Shame on you. You're probably the same person who slows down in a

Guess what, you don't have to fill out anything anymore. Just insert
check, seal, and enter envelop into machine. But I don't seal the
envelop first, 'cause I always forget how much the check was for. So I
leave the envelop unsealed, punch in the right numbers, then seal and
let the machine take my money.

I don't see why you can't understand that some people aren't comfortable
doing things the way you do, and that's ok, too.

Or why someone who is not a tourist (the original poster just wanted to visit
his friend) may not want to spend any time wandering around Oakland getting to
"know the community", when he can better spend time visiting with his friend.

Why doesn't his friend know of any places to stay?

Okay, sometimes you need a hotel, not a motel, but in a pinch there are
always reasonable, cheap places to stay (except near San Jose).

Perhaps my girlfriend got better rate by staying there for five nights? Or
perhaps they have raised they prices again. I still remember $32 Motel 6 rates
in various bay area locations. But it has been long time ago ...

I don't know, and not speaking for him, I can think of a couple of reasons.
Friend just moved here from (fill in blank), and not familiar with lay of
land. Or, it's a surprise party for friend's birthday. And a couple of
others if only my creative juices are not all devoted to my job at the moment.

At the time most Motel 6s were charging $32 to $35 a night, one of the 2
in Vallejo was charging $19 a night. (The other, more modern one was
charging $35.)

On another note, I'm wondering, what's this with people's newsreaders?
I've had to re-wrap the text above because it's too long. Can't people
get software that works properly? Used to be that all newsreaders wrapped
at 80 or less (the good ones at 70 to 75 just to be sure), so that it
would display properly in all newsreaders. Sheesh.

I'm glad you tossed in that little qualifier at the end. Use to be that when
guests from out of town visited, they stayed at one of several inexpensive
places. Two years ago was when we first started noticing that those places
were no longer cheap and no longer available. Rather than fight city call, I
set up a guest room to accommodate those folks who drop in for whatever
reason because even if they are willing to pay, there are just no rooms
available anymore.

Used to be that one could stay in Gilroy, but now the closest place for
casual lodging appears to be Monterey.

Maybe your lines don't wrap at 67 after all, but maybe 76. Let's see if
this one gets grunged when displayed. According to Tin, I have quoted 3
lines above.

Anyhow, even in SJ I can think of a fairly cheap place to stay for the
night: the baths. Of course, that's not an option open to women, but
there are still hostels and whatnot, even in SJ. But, I guess the days
are gone of the $5 a night fleabags on Monterey Road.

I have a friend whose company was paying his hotel stay while he's looking for
an apartment. Even then he has to change hotel every week because he can't get
room in the same hotel for more than a week.

More and more, companies are being asked to extend corporate housing these days.
Folks relocating to this area are having a hard time finding apartments.

(I do know of a studio right now for $1650/month in MV, and a 2 bdr. for $2175, if
anyone's interested. 6 month lease, then month to month.)

Those "$5 a night fleabags" are now "$90 a night fleabags". One of my
clients recently needed to put someone up for a few weeks. After a week of
searching, they found a place that had a room continuously available for
several weeks at the bargain rate of $85/night. When the fellow came into
town, he called the company and said, "This is a joke, right? Where am I
REALLY staying?"

A friend who occasionally comes into town to help me tune up my network
started using hostels a couple of years ago, but now stays in the guest
room. There is no question that lodging is very tight here in the valley.

This same friend found a one bedroom place near San Mateo for $1,300 per month. His
office is in South SF. So his commute is only 20 minutes. He is in heaven.

I alluded to that in a previous post. Is is very difficult to get a room for
an extended period because of heavy-use days and advance bookings.
Generally, those rooms which one can have for weeks are not what one would
call luxurious.

I've live in Santa Clara County my entire life. I don't know any good
cheap places to rent. Why should I? I live my house.

I remember staying at a campsite near Half Moon Bay right on the ocean.
I think it was a state beach and pretty deserted due to location and
such. It would be worth checking out because the Marin campsites are
very very popular because of the scenery and location.

I got a place at Mt. Diablo. This will work out nicely, because I think it
will be closer to our friend. 2 nights, $39.50. :-)

If this goes well, I'm going to try this more often and see more of
California. I just moved here 2 years ago, lived in Texas for 5 years
before that. I left the Dallas-Ft.Worth metroplex maybe 3 times in 5
years, which I really regret. At least I made one trip to San Antonio and
saw the Alamo.

Hi Dave,

I have checked and my newsreader wraps at precisely 80. Now I have
modified this setting to use 72 instead. Thank you for letting me know
about this problem.

Wes

You could stay in a hostel. Check http://www.hostels.com/us.ca.html.

What is the baths and how can they actually forbid women?
