Just 10 days to go until the California State Fair. I shall
be departing Australia for the USA tommorrow to be exact. I want
to travel around a few days before the fair begins.
I can hardly wait to get to Sacramento for the fair. I am
currently at home in Tasmania, preparing to depart tommorrow.

So it takes that long to walk from the Outback on Howe to Cal Expo? That is
some sloooow walking. Please tell us what interest this has to us here in
ba.broadcast?

So, what is so great about the state fair? My local county fair is a mix of
stinky 4H areas, a building with quilts that have ribbons, and some
amusement rides thrown together with chewing gum by carny people. Along the
way, one might find cotton candy and ice cream bars. There is a stage show
on a portable stage they pull onto the racetrack. Last I saw the stage
show, they had brassy music from the 40s. It is hot and dusty. If you stay
too late, you may become collateral damage from the clash of the gangs. Is
the state fair different?

Not much, but it is a great obsession with the Chuckiemonster and all
of his jet setting alter egos. You can find him at the figure skating/motel
guide booth.

It isn't about the State Fair. It is about Chuckie manipulating his
imaginary Australian Sims. It's an annual ritual that plays out here
with increasing intensity.

That's the California State Fair all right. It's just a big version of
the county fair. They used to call it Cal Expo, but the promoters must
have had pangs of guilt for calling such a moth-eaten event an "expo",
so they dropped the Cal Expo name some years back.

But, if you're lucky you can meet Jim Hall from Yard Birds garden
center. He used to always DJ from there.

Look for county fairs to start changing that. A friend was
experimenting this year with the Solano County fair, by bringing in
local bands featuring country music, hip hop, New Orleans style, and
even ALO and Chuck Prophet.

ALO (Animal Liberation Orchestra) is a particular favorite of mine as
I've seen them evolve from playing 80-seat rooms to 1500 seat venues
(and the bass player used to wait on me for lunch every day before he
became a fulltime musician). And they know no limits on genre. They
play everything from bluegrass to funk. These guys will be major
stars.

But the people who run the California State Fair will never get hip
enough to book groups like ALO. The California State Fair is a hick
fair.

The Cal-Expo name is used for the race track. This year there will be
no state fair meet but the regular harness racing that is usually there
48 weeks a year will run.
The harness people got tired of giving up four weeks a year to the
fair (the fair racing was two weeks but they needed a week before and
after to resurface the track).

I got delayed by one day. The Ultimate Traffic software that
the ChuckieMonster(tm) hsa mentioned does have practical real
world application, as it does have real world airline schedules,
including a number of new "budget" airlines. I was scheduled to
fly out yesterday on one of these airlines, but the flight was
cancelled, so I had to wait until today to fly out of Sydney.
I am en route to California, and will touch down in LAX in the
morning. I am headed first to Hot August Nights in Reno, and then
I come to Sacramento on Sunday. There a a number of new budget
airlines that you will not find on Travelocity, Orbitz, Expedia,
etc. There are even a few LAX to Reno flights you will not find
on the afforementioned travel sites. That is becuase a lot of the
budget airlines dont way to pay commissions to these services for
bookings, so they are not listed. It does save money on airfare
using these airlines.
It is only a week now until the fair starts, and I can hardly
wait.

Too bad that they are not going to allow you to enter the fair. They have
flights from Outback Steakhouse to Reno? That I need to check out.

They should put in an Outback at Sacramento Intergalactic Airport (tm
- apologies to Bob Graswich at the Bee). That'd solve all of
Chuckie's problems, except for the need to pass through security to
get his Bloomin' Onions.

He'd probably nearly move there. He's got a thing for chain
restaurants at airports, speaking fondly of the Sbarro's at Kuala
Lumpur International Airport. He could sit there at the Sacramento
airport and watch the departure monitors... and "fly", in his dreams.

Chuckie,

I trying to book passage on Wombat Air from Hobart to Sacramento
International Airport for the State Fair, but all their flights stop in
Honolulu for refueling. Do I need to get a transit visa if I want to
stay in the Republic of Hawaii for a day or two? Let me know; if I can
swing this Kristi Yamaguchi promised she'd do a naughty newscast for me
if I make it over.
