Students Get Lesson in Cheating By Fredrick Kunkle Sunday , June 4, 2000 ; C02 Montgomery Principal Steps Down Students at Montgomery County's top-ranked elementary school received a lesson in cheating from their principal and at least one teacher, according to an expanding investigation by district officials. Potomac Elementary School Principal Karen Karch stepped down Wednesday after parents complained that their children had been inappropriately coached through Maryland's achievement tests last year. Fifth-grade teacher Zorina Mohammed has been placed on administrative leave. "The picture of impropriety on these exams is overwhelming and damaging," schools spokesman Brian J. Porter said. Children, not adults, first raised the alarm about the cheating. Their parents said the cheating took several forms. In some cases, students were allowed to keep answering questions after time had run out. In others, test monitors offered helpful hints to students who answered incorrectly, such as suggesting that they reconsider some of their answers. Karch strolled around a room during a social studies test with a map, pointing to the country students were to write about, and even called in some students after the tests were completed to have them change their responses, parents said. The school jumped from 10th place in the state's ranking of achievement to third last year, and from seventh in the county to first. Pamela Y. Hoffler-Riddick, an associate superintendent directing the investigation, said that although no evidence has surfaced that others were involved in cheating, the investigation is broadening. The widespread cheating scandal rocked a school with a reputation for overall excellence that challenged students with innovative programs such as its Chinese-language immersion. It also marked a first for Montgomery County, although there have been other serious lapses during the seven years since the state initiated the Maryland School Performance Assessment Program.
