==========================================================================
The Global SchoolNet Foundation
and
Globalink Incorporated present
"Family Tree-Mail"
--------------
A United Nations International Year-of-the-Family Project
==========================================================================
This unique, first-ever global Internet project will utilize
Globalink's Language Assistant translation software to permit students
who speak English, Spanish, French, Italian, and German to join this
project and write in their native language.
1995 is the United Nations Year of the Family. This oral history
project observes and celebrates the varieties of families found in
your own and different cultures. Project highlights:
* We will match small clusters of classes from Spanish,
French, Italian, or German speaking countries with small clusters
of classes in English speaking countries. (Each cluster will
operate in two languages: English and one of the other languages).
* We will send your class a free copy of the appropriate
translation software for either Macintosh or Windows.
* Your students will complete the FAMILY TREE-MAIL project
activities described above, in their native language, and mail it
to your project cluster partners.
* When you receive contributions in a foreign language
you will use Globalink's Language Assistant software to translate
the message into your own language.
* Each class will publish their own FAMILY TREE-MAIL
anthology or newsletter, as described above, in their own language
and share it with all participants.
* All schools will be asked to help get the maximum amount of Public
Relations exposure for this first ever project. Schools will be
*STRONGLY* encouraged to contact their local press in order to
accomplish this objective.
PURPOSE: * Conduct meaningful correspondence among students who
do not speak one another's native languages
* Develop international, intercultural, and inter-
generational dialog, understanding, and appreciation
* Improve native language skills in reading and
composition
GRADES/AGES: Middle school through high school (grades 5-12, ages 12-
18 years)
NUMBER OF CLASSES: 16 classes (see comments below)
EMAIL: families@bonita.cerf.fred.org
HOW TO You may register to PARTICIPATE even if you don't meet
REGISTER: all the selection criteria listed below. Otherwise you
may register to OBSERVE and obtain selected proceeds
from the project. DO NOT CALL OR SEND RE-CONFIRMATION VIA
SNAIL MAIL!
WHY YOU SHOULD This is a remarkable, pioneering project which will push
REGISTER back the boundaries of K-12 global participation on the
Internet. Up to now, participation in global learning
projects has required participants to either work in
English or be bilingual... or both for many classes
around the world. Obviously, the language barrier makes
the vast majority of potential classroom-based learning
projects impossible.
This project seeks to overcome this barrier and to
demonstrate that language differences need no longer
separate people of good will from learning from and
interacting with others around the world. This project
will also make a valuable contribution to you and your
students as we learn together, for the first time, the
skills, viewpoints, and strategies we must employ when
we become active participants in a truly "global
village" experience.
PROJECT 1995 is the United Nations Year of the Family. In the
SUMMARY: United States, President Bill Clinton proclaimed this
the Year of the Family and encouraged all Americans to
celebrate the family. "Family Tree-Mail" is an oral
history project which observes and celebrates the
varieties of families found in our own and different
cultures.
Thank you for your help. Please feel free to pass this message on to
other German schools. We are set with every other country except Germany.
Hope to hear from you.
-Greg
