Question is >>how to I get rid of this stuff. Any ideas? Is it a high phosphate problem? Purple algae is red-slime (cyanobacteria), actually a bacterial growth which is fueled more by dissolved organics in the water than phophates although phosphates are a contributing problem. Phosphates are more of a problem when it comes to controlling hair algae. A marine aquarium with a properly regulated protein skimmer will not have any slime algae. Alternatively, a quick temporary cure is to add 1 tablet of Maracyn per 25 gallons of water. This will immediately (1 or 2 days) kill the red/purple slime algae but it is not the solution. Good Luck Steve
