Hey netland! I've got a good one for you: I am a researcher at University
of Delaware currently working on weakfish (Cynoscion regalis), a saltwater
fish that lives off the East Coast over the continental shelf. We have
several 300 gallon tanks with UGF's and canister filters (Ocean Clear). A
couple days ago we noticed a white stringy mass on the eyes of one of the
fish. According to Mardel's disease chart, this would be some kind of
bacterial infection and should be treated with Maracyn. So we did that
along with Maroxy in a 150 gallon hospital tank. The infection does not
appear to be improving, but it doesn't look worse either. Anybody got any
ideas? We have a limitted number of fish to work with for the winter
(since all of them have migrated to deep water off the Carolinas for the
winter) so any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Replies
should be e-mailed to: "rptjr@brahms.udel.edu" or posted on the net.
Thanx in advance 8^)

Rich,

The stringyness makes me think that maybe the fish has a fungus infection.
I can only speak from experience with fresh water fish. When they had fungus
infections (usually on the mouth or fins), I tried Mardel's Maroxy with no
effect. What worked was some tablets called FungusCure that discolored the
water a lot, but worked. I think it's made by Aquarium Products. I'm not
sure if it works for saltwater. I've read about treating freshwater fungus
infections with saltwater baths and copper. Does anyone know if a freshwater
bath would help with this? Is the fish in full strength seawater (I know it`s
found in the brackish waters of the Chesapeake Bay)?

I recently had a heniochus develop a popeye condition with some external
white stuff on it. Limited response to a product called Eye Fungex (two-part
treatment of siver nitrate and K dichromate, directly applied.) Then tried
a product called Furan-2, which is yellow stuff added to the water (guess
that's not very specific, but the package is at home.)

The Furan-2 knocked it right in the head. Noticeable improvement in less
than 24 hours. Gone after two treatments. No noticeable effect on filtration.
The treatment regimen was:

1 capsule in 10 gallons.
1 capsule again the third day.
wait 24 hours
strip medication with 50% change, dose with Shieldex, and restart carbon
filtration.

As usual, I don't know exactly what the disease agent was, only the symptom.
Guessed right this time. Good luck.
