As part of a fish simulator I'm writing I need a relatively scientific
definition of the term "water hardness". If someone could help me with
the following, I'd appreciate it:

	* Define it? What are common level ranges?
	* What most directly effects this value?
	* What effect does hardness level have on fish living in the
water? (Somewhere I've gotten the idea that fish won't mate
	  in certain water hardness levels.)

This will help me alot. Thanks.
