i'm having problems with a strange kind of algae in my reef setup:
it's a 60g tank with just a venturi protein skimmer. i use chemipure
and polyester filter floss for mechanical filtration. lighting is
the dual 175W 5500K MH and two 40W actinics. the temperature is kept
less than 80F. the tank had about 2lbs/gal of live rock. there is
only several soft corals and some sea urchins. i don't feed this
tank at all. this tank had finished cycling about 3 months ago.
everything looked like it was doing fine until...

i had just added a large rock of mushrooms corals from an aquarium store.
and then performed a small water change (with warm water from the tap).
after this i got a bloom of some strange looking algae. the urchins were
all fine but all my snailed looked like they were dying. i checked ammonia,
nitrite, nitrate, kH, and pH; they were all very normal. the algae looked
slimy brown and covered my macroalgae, rock, and tank. i thougth it was
cyanobacteria so i gave a 1/2 dose treatment of maracyn 1 (the one with the
eurythromycin). (i removed the chemipure and turned off the protein
skimmer.) after a week of this treatment it still hadn't gone away.
next i turned off my lights for a few days and i'm waiting to see what
happens.

the suspected causes: the rock with the mushroom might have carried it.
maybe it was copper or some other heavy metal in the warm water i used
in the water change.

i would be interested in hearing any suggestions on how to get rid of
this algae.

Okay now you either added makeup water from the tap or you mixed some
new salt water from tap water and did a water change right; you didn't
replace saltwater with fresh tap-water right?

I bet the tap-water is your problem. Get a DI unit (or RO) and filter
your source water. I had the same 'brown-yuck' problem you did till
I started treating source water.

Also, you might not want to use water from your hot-water heater.
I've heard it can add stuff. Use cold tap-water into some treatment
devise (RO or DI) and mix you SW change water in a bucket and let it
age for a day or two before changing. This process will allow gases
to balence and allow the water to warm up. Use a small aq heater
to get it to the proper tempureture if you have to.
