Question from a novice , about Uranium Thorium dating of stalactites /
speleotherms .
Having spent some time online google searching , I m still not sure
if it is possible to date relatively recent '' calcite deposits ''
using modern uranium thorium method , it clearly being done on samples
much older , within the archaeology field it has been used to date
rock art 30,000 plus years old .
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speleothem#Absolute_dating ,
.
this '' old iron tool '' was found in an old mine site , I NOTE
there is a modestly thick and visible layer of ''calcite sand
grains'' on it , that fell from the roof and or sides of the old
mine , before the mine collapsed and buried the '' old iron tool ''
on the site with the entire mass then set into a conglomerate of
mixed minerals as shown here .

.
my questions are assuming iron tools must be aged from between about
5000 years old and may be relatively very recent , can existing
tests date the '' cave popcorn '' accurately , withing this
rather young age range , certainly a lot less than 5000 years ?
1. would it be possible to date this '' cave popcorn '' calcite
sand
 2. and where in australia can I have this done ?,
 3. and how much would it cost ?
 .
Cave popcorn, or coralloids, are small nodes of calcite, aragonite or
gypsum that form on surfaces in caves, especially limestone caves.[1]
[2] They are a common type of speleothem.[1][2]
