I am not even sure if your friends would be disappearing in your model. I
suspect that (speaking as a dot on the balloon), I would notice nothing
whatsoever.

The observed red shift is obviously something very fundemental, but is
difficult to interpret purely as "distance", since distance nowadays is
extrapolated from the observed red shift!
