While there is some evidence from NASA probes to Mars that life does not
currently exist there, it is possible that simple life did exist on Mars early
in its development. Dr. Christopher McKay has been researching this
possibility by studying conditions in the Antarctica.

Antarctica is the coldest driest place on Earth, and hence the most Mars-like.
There is direct geomorphological evidence that in the past Mars had large
amounts of liquid water on its surface. Atmospheric models would suggest that
this early period of hydrological activity was due to the presence of a thick
atmosphere and the resulting warmer temperatures. Antarctica provides a model
for how life might have survived on Mars as it became colder and drier and
provides us with a strategy for searching for fossil evidence of that life.

Dr. McKay is with the Space Science Division, NASA Ames Research Center.
