>From June 24 to August 2, 1996, The American Phytopathological Society=20 (APS) will host a free, interactive, on-line symposium on Karnal=20 bunt---an emerging plant disease affecting wheat, durum wheat, and=20 triticale. Karnal bunt was discovered in 1931 in India near the city of Karnal.=20 Since then, the disease has been found in the primary wheat-growing areas= =20 of India, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Mexico. In March 1996,=20 scientists confirmed the presence of Karnal bunt in Arizona in certified=20 durum wheat seed, the first known occurrence of this disease in the U.S.=20 It has since been found in several counties in adjacent areas of Texas,=20 New Mexico, and California. Future U.S. Karnal bunt-related crop losses=20 may not be drastic, but the disease does have quarantine significance and= =20 therefore could affect domestic grain exports. APS' free on-line symposium will feature papers from noted Karnal bunt=20 experts, as well as from other wheat scientists. Participants in this=20 interactive symposium will be able to pose questions and comments to=20 these experts=97or to other attendees=97via electronic mail. An APS moder= ator=20 will open and close the symposium, and will ensure that discussions stay=20 on track. The symposium will also contain links to other Internet sites=20 of interest, and will include a folder of press clippings about the=20 ongoing status of the disease and its management. The on-line Karnal bunt symposium will serve as a prelude to the 1996 APS= =20 Annual Meeting in Indianapolis, where, among other things, additional=20 technical sessions will be held on the subject of Karnal bunt. For more information about this on-line symposium, or on the Annual=20 Meeting it precedes, visit the APSnet WorldWideWeb home page at: =20 http://www.scisoc.org/ We look forward to your participation in this exciting electronic event,=20 and appreciate any help you can provide in spreading the word about this=20 symposium throughout your department.
