Things obviously haven't changed much over the past 20 years. i still
remember the director of the zoology department telling the final year
class about career options: teaching, agriculture (lots of room for seed
salesmen on the prairies), medical school (if you could get a place), vet
school (it was easier getting into medical school), business school,
etc. The only "zoology career" area open was and I quote "Spending the
next 10 or so years as a grad student, until someone dies and a spot
opens in the department" Nice to know after you have invested 4 years.

Our class was about 40 students. The same speech was given the following
year to an audience of 4. It took another three years before they
revamped the program to reflect the changing employment enviroment.

Needless to say, I am not in the biology field today. But given the
changes in technology - DNA, genetics and computers - I probably should
have stuck it out.
