Traffic/readership in biology newsgroups

Here is some information that addresses the question posed recently
in bionet.general about traffic and readership statistics.

The data below are from the Usenet Readership Report for January 1994,
the most recent report available. The newsgroups are sorted by the
number of articles posted per month. With the notable exception of
genbank.updates and methds-reagnts (the first two groups listed), the
number of articles posted (column 4) is generally far smaller than
the number of readers detected in the sampled population (column 2).

The sci.bio.* newsgroups are included at the bottom, for comparison.
Several of them, including sci.bio.evolution, which has the most
traffic and is moderated by Josh Hayes, are only about 6 months old,
but going strong. Sci.bio has by far the largest surveyed readership.

+-- Estimated total number of people who read the group, worldwide.
  | +-- Actual number of readers in sampled population
  | | +-- Propagation: how many sites receive this group at all
  | | | +-- Recent traffic (messages per month)
  | | | | +-- Recent traffic (kilobytes per month)
  | | | | | +-- Crossposting percentage
