    First, poison ivy causes a rash because the oils on it contain
   a skin irritant. Your skin has its own oils that form a chemical barrier

If I remember my pathology class (which I probably don't) from ten years ago,
I think poison ivy causes an immune reaction rather than being a skin
irritant.  The reason it takes a while for the rash to appear has to do with
the time it takes the immune system to respond.  (Jeez, it's been a long time
since I accessed that information--I think "bit rot" has set in! :-) )

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. :-)
