I'm a student doing research on the effects of Hurricane Andrew (Aug. 92)
on nonindigenous species in Florida. I have gathered a fair amount of
material assessing the situation immediately after the storm, but having
difficulty discovering where we stand today. At the time, it was
estimated
that mechanical and chemical control of nonindigenous plants would cost
$14-million over 5 years. I am particularly interested in the likely
increase in the spread of Melaleuca quinquenervia and Casaurina
equisetifolia, invasive species of primary concern here.

I don't expect much to be published yet (I've done what I consider to be
a pretty decent literature search and haven't found anything
comprehensive), but would appreciate any pointers, leads, suggestions,
criticisms you might have. I would like to communicate with folks doing
research in this area. I understand someone from Rutgers has been
working with the Everglades National Park people, but I don't know who it is.

BTW, I know about and have the state's "Assessment of Invasive
Non-indigenous Species in Florida's Public Lands," OTA's "Harmful
Non-Indigenous Species in the United States," and several other articles
and documents published in the fall of 1992. Just hoping for anything
more recent -- even anecdotal material.

Thanx in advance for any suggestions.

You might try to contact Dr. Stuart Pimm at the University of TEnnessee:

I think he has a post-hurricane project running.
