Hi. We are using Thimerosal (Sodium ethylmercurithiosalicylate) as a antibacterial preservative added to the water in our cell culture incubators. I asked a supplier how to get rid of this toxic solution (1g Mercury in 20 l of water). They recommendet making it alkaline (pH 10) with NaOH, then adding sodium sulfide to pecipitate the mercury. But nothing happend. After some days, small flocks of sulfur collected at the bottom. How would you precipitat the mercury? Or do you simply put this kind of solution in your sink? Do you know an easier to dispose alternative? Any suggestions and comments are welcome! -- +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Wolfgang Schechinger Institute for Diabetes Reserch Koelner Platz 1 80804 Munich Germany Phone +49 (89) 30 79 31 24 Fax +49 (89) 30 81 733 email u7k0201@sunmail.lrz-muenchen.de (Standard disclaimer applies) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
