I am making availible a paper I have written called "The Basic
Organization of Nervous Activity and the Cognized World". I would
greatly appreciate comments or criticism!

Here is the introduction:

#Humans, animals and all organisms are built so that they will quickly
#and reliably detect relevant environmental (as well as internal)
#phenomena, and act appropriately. This is the essence of cognition.
#The higher animals, especially vertebrates, have evolved brains and
#nervous systems which facilitate cognition of unparalleled complexity,
#scale, sensitivity and speed.
#
#In this paper, I give a brief explanation of how vertebrates have
#achieved this, by reviewing Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela's
#framework of "autopoiesis". I will discuss their treatment of the
#organization and operation of the nervous system, then discuss within
#this context the neurophysiological research of Walter J. Freeman,
#Christine Skarda and their colleagues. Finally, I will explain how it
#is feasible to envision Mark Johnson's theory of the structure of
#human experience within these terms. By describing a theory of
#cognition working from the neuronal level up, I will indicate how it
#is possible to correlate the immediate experience of the world with an
#operational explanation of nervous activity.

Please write me if you would like a copy, and specify .dvi or
postscript format (or give me your physical address so I can send you
a hard copy).

Jake.
