"Coding" algorithms

I'm looking for some sources on "coding" (as opposed to
bit-by-bit or byte-by-byte) algorithms. Would you all
please point me in the right direction (books, papers,
etc.)?

My apologies if this question has been asked recently.

Thanks in advance,
Dennis Martin
