DES info wanted

I have managed to get hold of information on the main DES encryption /
decryption algorithm, but miss a few pieces of information. I am reading Security
in Computing by Charles P. Pfleeger. The book explains how the S-boxes and P
box works, but doesn't give any information beyond the existance of the initial
permutation and the inverse initial permutation.

I would like someone to explain how the initial permutation and
reverse initial permutation works, in sufficient detail so that I can write my
own DES code.
