copyright of derivative works

Could someone tell me the correct copyright notice to use
for a derivative work? That is, if I have a program already
with a copyright notice of, say, 1984 and I make modifications
to it, do I use "Copyright 1984,1986" or "Copyright 1986"?

thanks,
Bob Devine
