Thus said rrb@corona.CSS.GOV (Robert Blandford): > > >I feel that I must defend Dorothy Denning's proposal. > >Let us suppose that her recommendations were put into practice. How >would the resulting state of liberty compare to that of a few years >ago; or even to the state for almost everyone today? > >My answer is that we would have increased liberty with her recommendations >in effect. > >Today any person can buy equipment to tap your communications. Quasi- >-government organizations like the watergate burglars, who could not >have obtained a warrant, can tap your communications. Law enforcement >people who are looking for evidence to use to get a warrant can tap >your communications. All of this monitoring would cease. In other words, encryption with Denning's proposed restrictions is superior to no encryption at all. While this is probably true, it hardly constitutes a strong defense of the proposal, since the real comparison is Denning's proposal vs. encryption without requirement of key registration. -- Marc VanHeyningen mvanheyn@whale.cs.indiana.edu MIME & RIPEM accepted A good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that anything that calls itself `science' probably isn't. - John "I don't know about minds, but I know what I like" Searle
