I saw a copy of the online newsletter of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and they had a mention of a talk at the Computers, Freedom and Privacy conference by Eric Hughes of DigiCash. Apparently DigiCash is hoping to set up a system of "electronic money". You could order, say, documents over the Internet and pay for it with this "money". Transactions would be confidential and anonymous. It would be like cash in that way. It relies on cryptography for its security and anonymity. I've heard that the company is based on the Netherlands and has some top cryptography people associated with it. Does anyone have more information on DigiCash, and the specifics of their money system? Bob Anderson

Although I think the idea of electronic cash is wonderful, I'm afraid it will never get very far given the present worldwide drug hysteria. Unlike the private use of cryptography, which no government will ever be able to control, the success of cryptographic cash depends in large part on governments formally recognizing it as legal tender. I think the company you refer to is called CWI (Centre for Mathematics and Information Science). I only know they are in the Kruislaan at Amsterdam or Amstelveen. You should contact them yourself to get more information. The guy who knows more about is is called David Chaumbers (I thought). Ferry Johann Alcatel Bell Research Centre Francis Wellesplein 1
