I was born on a farm in 1939, and remember some of it while the war was going on, and then, as I neared puberty, was in the field myself. We did it with what is now called 'child abuse'. At the time, I was hot and sweaty in the August sun, forking hay, standing shocks, or whatever, but I never felt like I was being abused. Everyone was out there, the women and girls, all of us trying to get the crop in before it rained. I worked hard, but then again, I felt like I was worth something. Kids today dont feel like that anymore do they. Farmers usta send trucks into town to hire kids to ride back out to pick vegetables and fruit. They didnt even make minimum wage, but they did, as I did, learn volumes about the value of a dollar. Twits put a stop to all that, saying that riding trucks (like we still see going on all over the world) was dangerous. Altho I dont recall ever hearing of any kid who got hurt. But if so, why not use the school busses? The only reason I can think of is the cost of insurance. the Lawyers would have a field day if a kid ever got hurt. Hurting kids by having them grow up to be lazy and stupid dont seem to count.
