It is something that can be bought, sold, traded, rented, or stolen. Its 
a commodity. Just like labor. Labor can be sold, rented or stolen (as in 
slavery or the draft). It is an object of exchange and recieves whatever 
economic value it has in the exchange.

Sniggling and higgling over portability misses the essentials.
