THE Confederation of British Industry (CBI) yesterday renewed a call for a
cap on government spending and said transport should be a priority in the
coming Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR).

Digby Jones, Director-General of the CBI, speaking to business leaders in
Southampton, said that the Chancellor should cap government spending at 40 per
cent of national income. He argued that the business community was "very
uneasy" about proposals to raise spending to 40.5 per cent by 2003-4.

"There will always be pleas for higher spending, but ministers must keep a
lid on the amount of income we give to the state".

Within this spending cap, the Government should make improving British
transport infrastructure a priority, Mr Jones said. He called for UKP180 billion
of public and private investment in transport over the next ten years. Of this
figure, UKP 130 billion should come from the public purses.
