I hope this changes.  This is exactly why my father who has 
been a middle school teacher for 29+ years advocates the YRS
concept.  His opinion is that you would not have to spend the
first 3-4 wks of the new school year to bring the kids back
up to speed and back to the level they were before they left 
school for the summer.  He teaches Math and Science and these
skills are not kept sharp during the summer months.
