My generator control system is a bit complex, since it's a multi-functional
unit. It has 3 running speeds [only one of which is used for the production
of A.C. current. the others speeds are slower, for quieter running of a belt
driven air conditioning system and battery charging].
The basics of the safety cutout system is that the oil and overheat switches
are isolated from each other by diodes; when either light goes on [the
lights are still there], a one shot timer is activated, which pulls the stop
solenoid on the diesel engine for about 20 seconds.
You can buy these timers ready made [quick and easy], or make them yourself
[cost very little for the bits].
It's much easier with a spark ignition engine, of course; you only have to
cut the ignition.
There is a problem to solve when starting; the oil light will be on, and the
system will try to shut the system off while you're trying to start it.
There can be another timer that inactivates the safety system for a half
minute or so while the engine is started, or you could simply have a button
that you hold down until the oil light goes out.
I don't write much on this group, since I'm a total novice with electronics.
But I did build this system about 10 years ago, and it's still in service.
regards, Mark Holden
