Hi there,
Protel autotrax (PCB) is available for free download at:
http://www.protel.com/resources/downloads/index.html

We/I provide VESA video drivers (open source) so that
this package can be used at resolutions above 640x480:
http://airborn.com.au/layout/easytrax.html

Matthias Hartl wrote (and we host) PCX image format printer
drivers (open source) the output of which can be emailed,
put on websites or printed under windows. This is at:
http://www.airborn.com.au/layout/printdrv.html

All of this works successfully under DOS, WIN95, WIN98,
OS2 (with care) - but hasn't been trialed under
XP or win2000.... please, please can someone test then
give us all detailed instructions on how to install
under win2000 or XP? Can it be done, and how?

Hi Steve,

I don't know whether anyone else might have more success than I, but it
doesn't work for me under WindowsXP at all.

I get a black screen with flashing cursor and if I hit escape I get a "The
NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction" error! I've twiddled with
all the emulation settings to set it to Windows '95 mode and limit it's
memory and set it to full-screen, but with no luck I'm afraid.

Seems like I'll have to keep looking for a schematic/PCB design program/s

Regards

Christine

Yes, I understand, I'm just hoping we can find some other
people to try it. While I'm not familiar with XP, it could
just be something in your hardware or setup, - anyone else?

(PS, Christine, if you do decide to give Autotrax another try

I tried the PCX image format printer with Windows ME. I had no luck get a
useful sized output if I remember correctly
Ended up printing it on an old 486 with W95.

I have easytrax running under Windows 2000 IIRC I had a bit of trouble and
had to play around with the Properties to get it to work.
Just scanning through the Properties trying to remember which settings I
changed you need to change
under the Screen Tab change to full screen
I also changed a setting to give Easytrax more control (as it ran very very
very slow - ie a Black screen for several minutes before it fired up ) I
think the settings may have been under the misc tab:

Background
always suspend

Mouse
exclusive mode

sorry it has been about 12 months since I got easytrax working so I may have
changed more settings than these but it can be made to work fine under
windows 2000.
I have always been happy with 640x480 and this works fine for me.

I have used the PCX image convertor and it works fine ....

Uh huh... sorry about that - I have updated the web page
instructions to advise specifically setting the scaling
when printing out - although as you say, you have now
found another way to get the printing you needed.

I have been running Autotrax under WinXP for some months. Didn't actually
install it, just copied the program directory to my hdd and created a
shortcut to it. Ran first time. I switched to the VESA drivers not long ago
and they worked fine first go as well. Printing also works fine (Epson
EPL3000)

THANKS for that, two others (anonymous and so uncontactable I guess)
say they have Autotrax working under windows 2000, and one under XP,
so it seems autotrax works under both XP and w2k, if setup right.

As soon as I get more complete instructions off someone, I'll
put it on a webpage, meanwhile I have added your comment about
Mouse:exclusive mode to my existing page.
(Pity I don't have the OS myself, I suppose, to try it)
Anyone who can instructions/testing, please email me!

What is this ??? Freeware Software snobbery ???? :-)

well it worked and I was to lazy to install it and convert all my .PCB
files

any way for those of you feeling concerned about my mental equilibrium
I have installed Autotrax on my win2000 machine and it works fine ....

Can you let us know what video driver chipset you have,
version number and any other detail ?

Hi Steven,

I think the video card and its operating mode seem to be
the most important issue - banked versus linear addressing,
and whether the video chips are integrated on the mother
board of a laptop for example. Some time next week I want
to try 1600x1200 on a 16" sony laptop with WINXP professional
and running from a 128Meg memory stick - mmmm.

It could be that XP sets up the video card in banked mode
before running the dos app, your Vesa driver uses linear
(I think) and therefore has trouble - maybe we need a short
.COM file to switch the video card to linear before
TRAXEDIT.EXE loads up in that dos window - and maybe
switches it back to banked after autotrax finishes...

Are you aware of bank versus linear - is there a possible
alternate set of drivers - Christine (btw) came up with
this as a possible issue - I'll have more feedback during
week,
