I read in sci.electronics.design that Boris Mohar <borism-notrequired- @sympatico.ca> wrote (in <0kusru87o3dtc32pgp7v7lk4rf57r1fcma@4ax.com>) about 'old thread Re: DIY Soldering iron tips', on Tue, 29 Oct 2002: > So it is. I have a bunch of still functioning Metcal tips that have the >iron plating worn off. I would be very interested in finding a good >method for replaitng. Might try nickel even if it does not last as long. The same Google search threw up that chromium can be plated on to copper bits instead of iron, as a solder barrier. It didn't mention nickel, possibly because the solder goes through the nickel and attacks the copper. Of course, bright chrome plate is nearly impossible to 'tin', but rough plating may be better. Chromium is easy to plate BUT HEXAVALENT CHROMIUM IS HIGHLY TOXIC AND CORROSIVE SO DON'T MESS WITH IT UNLESS YOU REALLY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. -- Regards, John Woodgate, OOO - Own Opinions Only. http://www.jmwa.demon.co.uk Interested in professional sound reinforcement and distribution?
