I used a cheap bike computer from a local $2.00 shop in my old series 2A
landrover when I rebuilt the speedo, mounting the sensor in the speedo
head and using the spinning magnet there to trigger it. Took a little
bit of fiddling to get it right, but nothing hits anything and it's
protected from the weather and rocks.

By trial and error found a wheel size setting that calibrated with the
speedo and it gives me a fun little toy on the dash that can measure
distance covered quite well with a couple of meters accuracy over a km.
It hangs up over 50mph, but it's not often I do that in the landrover.

Very handy when measuring the length of a paddock and working out how
much fertiliser to use.
