Actually the speedo itself. Pull it out of the dash, open it up and you
find the cable turns a magnet that induces a small current in the meter
winding and causes it to deflect.

On the landrover it is open and the magnet assembly can have a sensor
pick up it's turning. I mounted the sensor on the inside back case of
the speedo "head". When it is assembled it is close enough to pick up
each turn of the magnet assembly giving me two pulses each revolution.

Although at the time I was simply making one good speedo out of three
duds, the extra bit was a great experiment that has worked well for me
for three years.
