Digi-key has some $5 mechanical encoders that spit out 32 cycles per revolution. I haven't seen more than 32 for 1 turn. Do you need/want detents? If so, you'll definitely be limited in steps per rev. There are two common ways to read encoders- an up/down counter circuit with parallel output and a microcontroller. If you use a microcontroller, you can vary the size of the steps (frequency?) depending on how fast the knob is being turned. If you're programming the frequency in a PLL, you'll need an MCU to send the frequency setting via 3 wire bus to the PLL anyway, so you can just program the MCU to read the encoder also. Peatman's book on PIC MCU programming has some very clear examples of using encoders. MR
